Remembrance Week

This week in our homeschool, we have done a short unit study on "Remembrance Day" / "Poppy Day" / "Remembering Sunday". All of those are terms which are used to refer to November 11 (as well as the Sunday following/ near to Remembrance Day itself).

We discussed the Wars a bit and talked about why we have a Remembrance Day now. We also read the poem by John McCrae (In Flanders Fields), and talked about the symbol of the poppy and what it meant to the soldiers and what it means to us today.

Then we made a poster for our own symbol of Remembrance.



All of the children helped to create the poster - Mr Man drew the "poppy field" on the bottom right of the poster as well as writing out the first stanza to the _In Flanders Fields_ poem (at the top right of the poster). Little Miss drew the large poppy on the top left of the poster as well as writing out the second stanza of the _In Flanders Fields_ poem (directly under her poppy flower). And Little Man drew the poppy flower on the bottom left of the poster. (The Mrs wrote out the third and final stanza of the poem). And all of the children drew and cut out the little red poppy flowers on the centre of the poster.

They all worked very hard - and I think this poster really gives us a lot to think about!
